The CanWest Games got it’s start in 2013. Back then it was called “PentathaWOD”.
The premise was this: A 2-Day event. The first day was a regular Functional Fitness event held at Rocky Point CrossFit. The second day was at Percy Perry Stadium. The events at Percy Perry Stadium were actual track and field events: Long Jump, Javelin, Discus, Steeplechase, Shotput. We’d wrap up a day that combined functional fitness with track field. For example, the final event last year was called “Steeple Helen”. 3 Rounds of regular Helen, but the 400M run had all the Steeplechase obstacles, including the plunge into a water hazard.
Every year was a sellout. We gained valuable experience each year. And each year we found ways to become more efficient and professional. Our goal is to provide a valuable competition experience for all our participants. A place to see how they fare against their peers, but more important, an avenue to test their self-confidence and develop courage, determination and spirit.
At the conclusion of PentathaWOD 2015 we polled our participants, we listened to the chatter at other competitions, then we watched the CrossFit Regionals pull up stakes and leave Western Canada. We determined there was big hole in the competitive calendar for MANY athletes. We decided it was time to evolve. To offer an exciting Competition for all levels of athlete. To turn the PentathaWOD into the biggest event in Western Canada and the US NorthWest.
